四、阅读理解
Howard Wicks, whose stories are rapidly spreading and getting much attention, once faced a big change in his life following a serious stroke (中风) in 2011. This stroke left him almost completely paralyzed (瘫痪的). He could only think and perceive (感知) the world around him, unable to move his body. Surprisingly, Wicks has found a way to get through these difficulties through the use of an eyegaze computer. This computer tracks (追踪) his eye movements, letting him communicate with those around him and follow his love for writing.
Over 18 months, using his eyes, he wrote 50,000 words, creating a story that shows his life experiences. The first chapter introduces his early life before the stroke, showing what his life used to be like. The story then follows his changes from his days in hospital to rebuilding his life in a difficult condition. It was a tough yet important period for him. This book is designed to be the first of a trilogy (三部曲). He decided to record his life from the age of 16 up to now.
Wicks says the process of writing was nothing but a valuable experience of showing his inner world. “I enjoyed writing it, especially the parts in which I expressed myself and shared how I faced what happened to me.” And he hopes his book will allow more people to learn about and support those in the same situation.
Wicks’ journey truly inspires plenty of people. His ability to turn hardship into a chance for creativity and communication shows his strong will. Through his writing, Wicks offers a powerful message of hope and courage. He also shares the importance of finding ways to connect and share our stories, no matter what challenges we face.
“From the moment I gained the ability to type, writing a book has always been my goal. I believe finishing it matters for my happiness and growth,” Wicks explained.
