The Secret Garden is written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. She was born in 1849 in Manchester, England. When her father died suddenly, life became difficult for her family. Mary is like Frances as a child. Both of them had to move to a strange new country because of the death of their parents. Both loved reading and were imaginative.
