With some free time during the Spring Festival holiday, I thought it was about time I made one of my China dreams come true: visiting Harbin I joined a tour and wrapped up in as many layers as I could.
The morning of the first day was spent visiting Siberian tigers. It was amazing seeing the animals up close, with there being so few left in their natural habitat. As they walked around, it was hard to process that they were even real at all.
That same afternoon, it came time to see the wonderful snow and ice world. This frozen amusement park just blew me away. The giant ice statues, all lit up from the inside, were simply magical to explore. And the variety of attractions and games available, such as sledding, made the trip all the more worthwhile.
My only regret was wearing only two pairs of socks and not three, as after the sun went down the temperatures quickly dropped as well.
While walking down the Central Street on my second day, architectural influences from both the present and the past were on full display, showing an amazing mix of cultures. In some ways, it reminded me of Nanjing Road in Shanghai just a lot colder The freezing temperatures didn't stop visitors from enjoying the local ice cream, however.
The most fantastic part of the trip, however, had to be Saint Sophia Building. The beautiful building sits in the middle of a large square, its large domes and beautiful facade grabbing the attention of all visitors. Looking at the structure transported me to the past, and I imagined how difficult it must have been to create such a beautiful building in these cold conditions.
The magic of this icy city has stuck with me since and I can't wait until next winter to visit again.
