My mother was one of twelve children. As they grew up，got married (结婚) and had children of their own，most of them lived near enough to gather (聚集) for holidays at my grandparents' home in a small town in the mountains of North Carolina.
I don't remember getting many gifts from them. I remember the sense of happiness and of being part of something. I knew that I was loved and not alone.
