Facing a poster of a horror movie, some people can't wait to enjoy it while some quickly close their eyes, hoping for forgetting the picture. Most of us simply consider that people have different reactions (反应) because of their different characters. Dr Sherry, from Dalhousie University, says it is the brain (大脑) which shapes our reactions to fear.
According to Sherry, the brains of the people who love horror movies seem to need a lot more excitement. That's because their excitability (兴奋性) is born moving low. As a result, their brains are naturally hunting for the chance to get excited. That's why some people are willing to pay a lot of money to jump out of an airplane. But not all of these people want to be in real danger. So,they choose to watch horror movies instead. My friend,Peter,an expert in skateboarding, loves watching horror movies as well. "Both horror movies and challenging skateboard movements offer my brain excitement," he says.
"Other people avoid meeting horrors just because their brains usually have a really strong startle response (惊吓反应),so when something scares them, they get hurt badly," Sherry says. "They are often thought to overreact to unpleasant experiences like being scared while watching a horror movie." "One of my friends,Miya had to be in hospital for special treatment, simply because of catching sight of a scary picture in a horror movie."
But there's also something interesting. Dr Sherry says that if people keep watching horror movies a lot, they might not be as scared any more. Our brains can get used to the scary things.
So,in the end, whether we like or dislike horror movies depends on our brains and how they deal with fear and excitement. It's different from one to another, and that's what makes us special when it comes to choosing movies.
