Old Samuel is a dressmaker and doesn’t have much money. His shop is next to a French restaurant. Every day at lunchtime, Samuel would go out of his shop and sit out of the restaurant’s kitchen. There he eats his only food—the black bread, when enjoying the wonderful smell coming from the kitchen.
One day, Samuel gets a bill (账单) from the master of the restaurant, Jean-Luc. So he goes to speak to Jean-Luc. He says he doesn’t buy anything from the restaurant. But Jean-Luc says, “You are enjoying the smell of our food so you should pay for it.” Samuel doesn’t want to pay. They go to Robert, the judge (法官) in their town.
Robert asks them to tell him all the things. Jean-Luc stands up and says, “Every day, this man comes and sits outside my kitchen. He smells my food when eating his. It’s clear that I’m giving more value (价值) to his poor food. So he should surely pay.”
The judge looks at Samuel and says, “What do you want to say about it?” Samuel says nothing. He just puts his hand in his pocket and rattles (使发出碰撞声) the coins inside. The judge asks him, “Why do you do this?”
