When my first wartime (战时) Christmas came, I was in a soldier (士兵) school in Ashland and not sure if (是否) I could make it home for the holiday. On the afternoon of December 23, we were told some of us would have a three-day holiday. It was one of the lucky ones. It was Christmas Eve when I got home, and there was a light snow. Mother opened the front door. I could see over her, into the corner (角落) of the living room where the tree always stood. There were lights in all colours shining (发光) in the green of the tree.
“Where did it come from?” I asked.
“I asked the gate boy to cut it,” my mother said. “I wouldn’t have one just for myself, but you called in such a hurry! He just brought it in this afternoon.”
The tree was almost as tall as the room, and the Tree Top Star was in its place. A few parts of the tree were a little messy, and it was bare (光秃秃的) in the middle (中间). But the tree made the room warm and full of the happy smell of Christmas.
“It’s not like the one you want to find,” my mother went on. “Yours was always in good shape (形状) and you were good at it. I think the gate boy didn’t know where to look for a better one.”
“Don’t worry,” I told her. “It’s perfect.”
It wasn’t, of course, but at that time I realized (意识到) all Christmas trees were perfect.
