What Is the Harvest?
The harvest is the time of year when the crops planted in spring are ready to be collected. Long ago, a good harvest meant there would be enough food for the long winter months. The whole community would work together to harvest the crops. With no supermarkets, the harvest was the only source(来源) of food, so a good harvest was for everyone to celebrate.
When Is the Harvest?
The harvest season in the UK begins at the end of August or the start of September. In years gone by, there was an ancient festival called Lammas to celebrate the beginning of the harvest. But it has always been the end that sees the most exciting moment of the harvest.
In the past, the harvest would not end until the last sheaf(一捆) of the crop arrived at the village, and there was often a great parade(游行) to welcome it.
In more modern times, the harvest celebrations fall on the Harvest Festival, which is usually on the Sunday closest to the Harvest Moon.

In the past, the arrival of the last crop meant the beginning of the Harvest Supper. A big meal of meat, vegetables, fruit and puddings would be shared by the community. Everyone, old or young, rich or poor, joined in with singing, dancing and games.

In some schools, children are often asked to bring food to be shared out among those who need it in the local community.
