When I started teaching in a middle school, I was sure I would change the world and touch children who needed love. Although most of my students seemed to respond pretty well to my teaching, there was a small group of teenage girls who became more and more hostile (敌意的) towards me.
One day a fight happened in my classroom. Trying to stop it, I stepped in to face one of those hostile girls, who started hitting me in the face. Two boys jumped up to control the girl, but the injury (伤害) was done. While the girl was suspended (停课) for a few days, I was determined (决定) that she would not return to my classroom. But I also prayed (企盼). I wanted to see all the students right there in my daily work at school. On the top of my daily teaching-plan book, I wrote this statement, "To see all the children in my classroom is always beautiful." With this view I could expect to heal (治愈) any anger towards the girl in my heart. After her suspension, she returned to my classroom. I learnt the girl's mother was trying to raise six children after her husband died in a car accident. The mother and I agreed to work together to help her eldest daughter.
There were no more incidents (事件) of anger the rest of the year. In fact, in the following seven years I was still working at that school. I taught all six of this family's children. When the youngest child was in my class, the mother told me, "Our family loves you. Every year one of my kids says, 'I hope I'm in her classroom!'"

A new study finds that plants communicate with one another to warn of danger.
We often consider plants as the furniture of the natural world. They don't move. They don't make sounds, and they don't seem to act on anything. But as is often the case, plants talk to each other all the time. And the language is chemical.
Over the years, scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, give out chemicals into the air to help neighbouring plants. These chemical warnings can spread information about one plant's disease or infestation (虫害), so other plants can protect themselves. But how plants receive and act on the information exactly is still mysterious.
This week, researchers in Japan offered some explanations. They have found out one chemical message and traced it all the way from beginning to end.
The scientists looked at tomato plants infested by a common pest (害虫). To start out, they grew plants in two separate plastic spaces connected by a tube (管子). One plant was infested and placed upwind and the others were uninfested and placed downwind. The downwind plants were later exposed (暴露) to the pest. The results showed that plants near sick neighbours before were able to protect themselves better against the pest.
They found one chemical appeared more often in the exposed plants. The chemical is called HexVic. The scientists discovered where HexVic came from, and put it over healthy plants. Those plants were then able to produce HexVic. Researchers made sure that uninfested plants could fight off bugs and diseases. How do they know when to protect themselves? They are warned first by their friendly plant neighbours.
It is not a simple story, and it may be happening in more plant species than tomatoes. It may also be happening with more chemical signals that are still unknown to us. In a word, we know that plants not only communicate, but also look out for one another.

60. B
解析:
56. 细节理解题。根据第三段第一句“scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, give out chemicals into the air to help neighbouring plants”可知C选项表述正确;A选项中“have fun”与原文“warn of danger”不符;B选项“seldom talk”与原文“talk to each other all the time”不符;D选项与第三段最后一句“how plants receive and act on the information exactly is still mysterious”不符。
57. 词义猜测题。结合语境“They have found out one chemical message and traced it all the way from beginning to end”,可知traced意为“追踪,跟随”,与followed意思相近。
