A new study suggests that dancing for just 20 minutes every day could help you stay fit.
The World Health Organization says adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate(适度的) exercise each week. This could mean activities like hiking, playing tennis, riding a bike—or dancing.
Aston McCullough, an assistant professor at North-eastern University in Boston, studied 48 people aged 18 to 83, all with different levels of dancing experience. He asked the participants to do five-minute dance while testing their oxygen intake(摄氧量) and heart rate.
The participants would dance for five minutes, rest for three minutes, then dance again, for a total of 20 minutes of dancing over about half an hour. The results showed that all the participants achieved at least a moderate level of physical activity through dancing, even without being told how intensely(强烈地) to dance.
The participants played their favourite music and danced however they liked. At times they even danced without music, but they all still achieved the required intensity(强度).
McCullough presented his findings at the American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Boston on February 14.
He said that dancing is a relaxing way to stay active, even at home. And he said that while most people think of dance as something light and easy, if you tell someone to just “have a dance”, they'll actually reach the same level of intensity they might get with a personal trainer.
So a simple morning dance to the radio—or moving to your favourite tunes in the evening—could be more beneficial than you think!
