An African - American boy was born in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in poverty(贫困). He could not see any hope for the future.
When the boy turned 13, his father showed him an old shirt and asked, “How much does it cost?” “Probably ” he replied. “Can you sell it at ?” the father looked at him. “Only a fool will buy it!” the boy shouted. “Why don't you have a try?” his father said.
The boy nodded and said, “I will try, but I can't promise anything.” He carefully washed the old shirt and smoothed out the creases(皱褶)in it. The next day, he came to a crowded subway(地铁)station. After about six hours, he sold it to a passer - by. With the two dollars, he ran all the way home excitedly.
After ten days, the father asked his son, “Can you sell an old shirt at ?”“No way! An old shirt is only worth,” the boy argued.
“Why not try it again?” said his father.
The boy decided to ask his cousin to draw a cute Mickey Mouse on the old shirt. This time he chose to sell it at the gate of a private school. Soon, it was sold to a little girl.
