HERE IS DR WATSON'S FIRST REPORT
Baskerville Hall
October 13th
My dear Holmes,
I hope you are well. Here are some facts about the Baskerville case.
First, there is an escaped prisoner(逃犯)—Selden—on the moor. But no one knows where he is.
Last Thursday:
Today Dr Mortimer and the Stapletons had lunch with us. After lunch, Dr Mortimer showed us to the path where Sir Charles died. There was a small white gate onto the moor halfway along the path. Maybe on the night of that day, Sir Charles left the house and walked down the path. He stood at the gate and saw something coming across the moor. He was so afraid that he ran and ran until he died of shock. But what was he running away from? Was it an ordinary dog? Or was it the black hound—the Hound of the Baskervilles? Does Barrymore, the butler, know something that he didn't tell us?
Last night:
I woke up suddenly at two in the morning. There was someone outside my room. I got up, opened my door, and looked out. Barrymore, the butler, was walking along the corridor with a candle in his hand. I walked after him. Barrymore went into a room and over to the window. He stood looking out of the window for a few minutes. Then he blew out the candle. I went back to my room and soon after I heard a door opening somewhere in the house. This morning when I saw Sir Henry, I told him about the events of the night. And together we made a plan of action. I tell you, Holmes, there are secrets in this big dark house, but we are going to find them out!
