Is there anywhere more important than home? We may have many homes during our lives but they are often the places we feel the safest. We use the word “home” in many English expressions. Maybe that also makes it clear how important the home is to us.
If our homes are safe and happy, when we get back to them,we might say,“ 1 ” Just like what Dorothy famously does in the film *The Wizard of Oz*. This means there isn't anywhere else that is as good as home.
However,if we find ourselves somewhere that feels comfortable and homely,we could say we feel “at home”. 2
We can also feel at home in a new job or feel at home with someone—meaning we feel comfortable with them. Or as the saying goes,“ 3 ” This means that the place we feel at home may not be a building but a place that we love and where we feel loved, maybe where our family and friends are.
4 Scoring a home run in baseball is a very common one. When a team,a person or an animal has finished something at last,we might say they are “home and dry”. In Australia and New Zealand, people say “home and hosed(被淋湿的)”. 5 They mean the job is done and you have time for a shower—you're “hosed” and dry!
A. Home is where the heart is.
B. There's no place like home.
C. Home plays an important part in our life.
D. Both expressions have the same meaning.
E. Home is always the place where we go and share our joy.

在澳大利亚和新西兰,人们会说“home and hosed(字面意思:被淋湿且干爽)”。

Trees play a special role in my life. I never picture the house without the trees. There was a row of poplars(杨树)in my first childhood home, but bark beetles had destroyed our once - lovely 18 - metre - tall trees.
Out on the farm,my grandparents always cut a Christmas tree from the fields. They were always short and had needles that left scratch(划痕)marks on our arms. Those trees were a family tradition and I can still recall their smell all these years later.
A huge willow tree once stood in the backyard as well. The kids had a tree house in it for a long time. Other kids in the neighbourhood enjoyed it too. But the old willow rotted(腐烂)from the inside out and had to be taken down. The kids are in their 30s now,and they're still upset about the willow. There's a sadness to a fallen tree;to the sound it makes when it hits the ground.
My husband and I were working as newspaper photographers when the active volcano(火山)Mt. St. Helens exploded. Many nearby forests were completely destroyed by the effects(影响)of the explosion.
Trees tend to be symbols of strength and beauty. The death of a tree is a reminder of our own weaknesses. The trees returned to Mt. St. Helens—and they returned faster than the experts predicted. To all who had seen the destruction, the regrowth was encouraging. Those small trees reminded us of the beauty of new beginnings.
1. How tall were the poplars?
2. Where did the grandparents cut a Christmas tree?
3. How did the kids, who are in their 30s,feel when the willow was taken down?
4. What did the new trees in Mt. St. Helens remind the writer of?
