You may know the painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival(《清明上河图》)by an artist called Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty. Over 300 students from Nanjing Zhonghua High School worked together to recreate this famous painting.
The students’ art teacher Ma Min found a high-definition(高清晰度的)picture of the painting, divided the painting into eight parts and gave each part to a different group of students. Then,Ma joined the parts together to form the finished painting, which was 84 centimetres wide and 20 metres long.
The students began to work on the painting in September. It took them about three months to finish it. They had to use their imagination to fill in details and make sure that one part matched another both in the form and in the painting style.
The students did a lot of research and made some interesting findings. Li Zixuan was asked to paint the busy streets along the river. She learned that pillars(柱子)were used to mark a boundary line near the river. Shops were not allowed to open beyond this line. Otherwise, shop owners would be punished.
“Historical inheritance(遗产)and students’ own thinking are very important,” Ma said. “This painting is their own artistic creation. ”
1. How wide is the finished painting?
2. Why were the pillars used according to the students’ findings?
3. What will you do to learn about this painting?
