C
In Salzwedel, a small town in Germany, time seems to pass slowly, particularly at a bookstore—*Buchhandlung H. Weyhe*.
Founded in 1840, the bookstore is one of the oldest in Germany—even older than Germany itself. In 1871, its first owner sold it to Helga's grandfather. Shortly after World War I, he passed the business on to his son Walter, Helga's father.
Helga was born in 1922. The bookstore was truly a family business: Helga's mother Elsa worked with her husband and then Helga was old enough to help out behind the counter (柜台).
Helga took over the shop in 1965. She only sold books she wanted people to read. No title made it onto her shelves until she had read it. That was why fans of detective (侦探) novels would find few choices in *Buchhandlung H. Weyhe*: Helga was not a fan.
Helga's favourite book was *Stoffel Flies Over the Sea*, a 1932 children's title. It tells of a boy named Stoffel who travels in an airship to visit his uncle in Manhattan in New York City. Helga's love for the book was partly because she had an uncle living in Manhattan too.
Even when she reached her nineties, she showed no sign of slowing down. Although the shop has gone through some of history's darkest times, little has changed in the shop since the days of her father and even her grandfather.
The old lady died at the age of 98. With her death, Germany lost its oldest bookseller and Salzwedel lost one of its best - loved residents (居民).
