B
Long long ago, there was a special woman in ancient China. She was good at telling stories. She was the king's favourite wife. The king loved her stories and loved her very much. Sadly, one day, the woman became ill and died.
Everyone thought the king would soon find another favourite among his wives. But the king was so sad that he spent more time missing the woman and less time caring about his people. Everyone in the country was worried. They were afraid that another country might start a war because the king became weak, and many people might die. They must do something, and do it soon.
One day, a priest (祭司) saw some children playing with their dolls. The dolls made dancing shadows (影子) on the city wall. Because he knew all of the woman's stories, he had an idea to help the king. He made a puppet out of clay and it looked like the woman. When the puppet was finished, the priest went into the king's garden, carrying his puppet, a candle and a curtain (幕布). He placed the curtain near the king's chair. He put his candle, his puppet and himself behind the curtain. The king did not even notice the curtain at first, but the dancing shadow quickly drew his eyes. As the priest moved the puppet behind the curtain, he told a story she used to tell, one of the king's favourites.
The king knew the priest was there. He knew the puppet was there. But it seemed as if the shadow was telling the story, as if his wife was spending time with him.
The king was no longer sad. At the end of each busy day, the king went into his garden, hurried to visit his shadow wife and heard her stories once again.
That is how shadow puppets first began.
