China highlights
Pingyao Ancient City is a tiny city and it is about two kilometres across. It is about two hours' driving south of Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi Province. You can also easily reach Pingyao from Beijing by bullet train in about four hours. Now it is in the UNESCO World Heritage List (世界遗产名录). There are many famous places in Pingyao. Let's look at some now!
Rishengchang Draft Bank was started in 1823 and it became the first bank chain in China. From that time on, its business opened in almost all areas in China. Now it has become a tourist site and lots of people visit it every day.
Ming - Qing Street once was famous as the Wall Street of China. It is the central line of Pingyao Ancient City. It had more than half of the financial institutions (金融机构) in China during the late Qing Dynasty. Now it is still the busiest place in Pingyao.
Pingyao's ancient city wall is about 6 kilometres long. If you want to take photos from the wall, you'd better go in the evening. The view of the old houses at sunset is amazing.
But remember, May to October is the best time to visit Pingyao. The temperature is comfortable. If you don't mind the cold, the off season has few tourists.
