Changes in lifestyle and tradition
C Read the blog post about how to stay cool in the past and the present and answer the questions.
Hot days, cool changes
It was an unusually hot day in the city. Even though it was early morning, the sun was already shining brightly, and the air felt heavy and still. I started sweating while walking to the underground station. Thankfully, as soon as I stepped into the station, I felt cool air all around me.
These days, staying cool is easy. But it wasn't always like this.
Back in the 1980s, when I was growing up, keeping cool was a real challenge. My family didn't have air conditioning. Instead, we had a simple electric fan. It hummed and buzzed all day long. My parents and I would crowd around it to try to cool down. When that wasn't enough, we washed our arms and faces with cold water. At night, my parents would often lay out a bamboo mat on the floor for a slightly cooler sleep. On especially hot nights, we'd even sleep under the stars and feel the breeze on our faces.
Can you imagine doing all that today? I can't! There's cool air almost everywhere now. My home and office both have air conditioners. Even public transport is air-conditioned, so I'm almost never stuck in the heat. If I'm feeling hot outside, I can easily get a cold drink or an ice cream from a shop. Instead of waking up in the middle of the night because of the heat, everyone sleeps peacefully in their air-conditioned homes.
I'm glad that my modern lifestyle has made it easier to deal with the heat. It's amazing to think how much life has changed in just over 40 years!
