Improving urban life
The world’s busiest cities can be exciting places—but for certain groups, like the elderly and people with disabilities, they can be difficult and even dangerous places to live. That’s why city governments around the world are finding ways to make urban life easier for these groups.
In Singapore, the government has done a lot to help people with disabilities and the elderly. Every train station in the city provides facilities for wheelchair users. For example, there are lifts to travel between the main hall and the platform, and wide ticket gates to allow wheelchairs to pass through. Singapore also has Silver Zones in neighbourhoods with a large population of elderly people. In these zones, the speed limit is lower than in other areas, and there are more crossing points to slow down traffic.
New York City has also tried to improve public transport for the blind. The city introduced new devices with sound signals to help them. When it is not safe to cross, a voice message will say “wait” followed by a slow beep. When it is safe to cross, a fast beep or a voice message will let people know they can safely do so. This small improvement has made busy crossings much safer for the blind.
The local government in London has worked hard to make the city safer and more comfortable for elderly people. The city has put more benches in public parks to make green spaces more welcoming for them. Many community centres also offer programmes to the elderly, such as learning digital skills.
These are just a few examples of how city governments are trying to help different groups. Urban environments are becoming safer for everyone and easier to live in.
