Xidi and Hongcun are two wonderful traditional villages in southern Anhui Province. They were built and developed by successful local businessmen long ago, which are based on the family unit. They are famous attractions now, for their natural and architectural (建筑的) features and the culture behind. They keep the original look of Anhui villages from the 14th to 20th centuries.
Xidi is surrounded by green mountains and has three clear streams running through it. Hongcun sits at the foot of a hill and is famous for its smart water system. In the centre of Hongcun Village, you can find a beautiful pond shaped like a half-moon, called the Moon Pond. The villages have many quiet lanes and traditional houses with lovely gardens. The buildings look simple from the outside but are elegant inside, with detailed wood carvings and old furniture. They show how people in the past lived peacefully with nature.
These villages were recognized as World Cultural Heritages in 2000. The government is trying hard to protect and develop them. It needs to keep the old looks and local lifestyles of the villages and attract more tourists to visit at the same time.
