When Toad learned that he was a prisoner in the prison, he lay down on the floor and cried for a long time. He wouldn't see the sunlight for twenty years. He felt sad.
One man worked at this prison. He brought the prisoners their food and drink. The jailer(狱警) was unkind to Toad. Luckily, however, his daughter felt sorry for him. Her name was Phoebe. She helped her father in the prison and brought Toad his food every day. She thought his crime(罪行) wasn't so bad. He hadn't killed or hurt anyone. She thought it was bad that Toad had to stay in prison for twenty years.
“Perhaps I can help you get out of the prison,” Phoebe said. “My aunt who is a washwoman and she does the washing for all the prisoners here. I think for a little money she will let me bring in some of her clothes. You can put them on and look like her.”
“Me!” Toad shouted. “Me, the Great and Famous Toad, dressed in a washwoman’s clothes! Oh, no. I’m too important to do that.”
“Do you want to get out of the prison or not?” Phoebe asked.
Toad thought for a moment, “Yes, of course I do!”
Phoebe kept her word. The next day, she arrived with her aunt, who brought a basket of clothes. They dressed Toad in the clothes. They hid Toad’s face under a large hat.
Toad walked through the jail slowly just like an old woman. He was soon surprised to find how easy everything was made for him. It wasn’t long before he was standing outside the jail.
