One dollar and eighty-seven cents. Three times Della counted it. That was all. And the next day would be Christmas.
Della stood by the window and looked out at a cat in the yard. She had only 1.87 to buy Jim a present. She had been saving money in every way she could for months, but she had only 1.87. Expenses(开支) were always greater than she had expected. There were two possessions that Della and her husband were proud of. One was Jim's gold watch that had been his father's and his grandfather's. The other was Della's long beautiful hair.
Suddenly, Della turned around and walked up to a pier glass(穿衣镜). Della pulled down her hair and let it fall to its full length. Then she walked out of the door and down the stairs to the street. Della stopped in front of a sign, it read, "Mme Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds. " She took a deep breath and went in. For twenty dollars, she sold her beautiful hair.
