A group of young people who wear ancient clothes are walking around gardens. They are not actors or actresses in a movie, but hanfu lovers in an event held in Beijing.
“Over 10 years ago, many people didn’t understand hanfu fashion(时尚), but nowadays it gets more attention,” said Liu Xiang, an organizer of the event.
Hanfu, the traditional clothing worn by the Han people, is brought back by young Chinese lovers, including Liu. She is also a member of a Hanfu Club in Beijing called “Hua Yan Hui”. They set up the club in 2011 to grow people’s cultural confidence(文化自信).
“My interest in hanfu came from my friends who are fans of traditional Chinese clothing,” Liu said. Her interest grew as she learned more about the culture behind it and got her first hanfu costume. “At first, some people laughed at those who wore hanfu in public, while more strangers(陌生人) asked about their clothing style(款式),” said Liu.
Now, more young people wear hanfu as they want to connect traditional culture with modern life. Yang Kunning was born in the 1990s. She often shares her love for hanfu online.
