The Spring Festival couplets are a representation of Chinese cultural heritage. Putting up the Spring Festival couplets is also an important part of Chinese New Year customs.
The Spring Festival couplets came from Taofu, or peach boards in the Zhou Dynasty. People believed that hanging peach boards on the door frames of the houses could drive away bad things. The Spring Festival couplets didn't take shape until the wooden boards were replaced by red paper in the Song Dynasty. Then in the Ming Dynasty, they became a kind of decoration and were popular all over the country. Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, had a special love for writing the Spring Festival couplets. In order to spread this cultural activity, he ordered all people to put up the couplets during the Chinese New Year.
However, do you know how to put up the couplets? There are rules for both the time and the right order. Usually, they should be put up before the Chinese New Year's Eve, and the best time is from 1 p. m. to 3 p. m. on the 29th day of the twelfth Chinese lunar month. Each couplet is made up of three parts, known as the upper couplet, the lower couplet and the top scroll. The upper couplet is usually on the right side when you're facing the door and the lower on the left. The couplets also have special meanings, showing people's wishes for wealth, health and happiness in the new year.
