Barney and Gary are talking about whether to live on Mars in the future.
Barney: In my opinion, there is no life on Mars. You know, the environment there is not
suitable for life at all. How can people $^{(1)}$
if there is no oxygen?
Gary: I don't agree with you. Our planet is becoming worse because of the rapid increase in
population. $^{(2)}$
, spacecraft can travel $^{(3)}$
. Some
people believe that humans could live on Mars $^{(4)}$
.
Barney: I won't agree with you until I see with my own eyes. I also know that it is hard for
people to walk properly $^{(5)}$
. It is quite dangerous
$^{(6)}$
the gravity on the Earth. What's more, the food will be in the
form of pills. It will not be $^{(7)}$
that on the Earth.
Gary: Don't be so worried. Life on Mars would be better in some ways. People would
have more space. They could also have more time to relax because robots would
$^{(8)}$
. Students wouldn't have to go to school. An interplanetary
network would allow them to study at online schools.
wear boots enough water more space three-eighths of too slow to
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. At present, our spacecraft are
$^{(1)}$
carry a lot of passengers to Mars. So far, scientists are not sure if there
would be $^{(2)}$
or oxygen for people to survive there. Moreover, they don't
know whether plants could grow there. The gravity on Mars is only $^{(3)}$
that on
the Earth, so people would have to $^{(4)}$
that are specially designed. However,
there is much $^{(5)}$
and cleaner air on Mars than on the Earth.
答案:(1) too slow to
(2) enough water
(3) three-eighths of
(4) wear boots
(5) more space
解析:

We do everything we can to hide from the sun in summer. Some wear hats, and others buy
umbrellas or sit under trees. But can you imagine what it would be like to have two suns over your
head?
Well, the Kepler-47 system does have two stars in its sky, according to a discovery in the
Science Journal*. The new system was found by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope. It is about 5,000
light years away from us. One of the stars is similar to our Sun, but the other is much smaller and less
than 1 per cent as bright.
In fact, systems with two stars are quite common. "Unlike our Sun, many stars are part of
multiple-star (多个恒星的) systems. There, two or more stars circle each other," said a scientist from
NASA's Research Centre in the US. Scientists are more surprised that there could be two planets in
the Kepler-47 system because it is very hard for planets to form in such a complex environment.
One of the planets, Kepler-47b, is closer to the stars. It's three times larger than the Earth.
The other one, Kepler-47c, is about 4.5 times the size of the Earth. Most importantly, Kepler-47c is
neither too close to nor too far away from the stars. It means the planet won't be too hot or too cold.
So scientists believe there could be water on it or even life.
(
) 1. According to Paragraphs 2 and 3, the two stars in the Kepler-47 system
.
A. are similar to our Sun in size
B. always move around each other
C. are quite unusual to exist (存在) together
D. belong to another multiple-star system as well
(
) 2. What does the underlined word "complex" in Paragraph 3 mean in Chinese?
(
) 3. Which is true about the planets in the Kepler-47 system?
A. Kepler-47c is neither too hot nor too cold.
B. Kepler-47c is proved to be suitable for living.
C. Kepler-47b is 4.5 times as large as the Earth.
D. Kepler-47b is farther from the Sun than Kepler-47c.
(
) 4. The passage mainly talks about
.
A. the newly-found Kepler-47 system
B. the stars and planets of multiple-star systems
C. the information of different systems in space
D. the special environment of our solar system
2. C
3. A
4. A
解析:
1. 第1题:根据第二段“One of the stars is similar to our Sun, but the other is much smaller”可知A错误;第三段提到“two or more stars circle each other”,Kepler-47是双恒星系统,两颗星彼此环绕,B正确;第三段开头指出“systems with two stars are quite common”,C错误;该系统本身就是双恒星系统,并非属于另一个多恒星系统,D错误。
2. 第2题:结合上下文“it is very hard for planets to form in such a complex environment”,双恒星系统的环境不利于行星形成,可知“complex”意为“复杂的”,选C。
3. 第3题:根据最后一段“Kepler-47c is neither too close to nor too far away from the stars. It means the planet won't be too hot or too cold”可知A正确;文中仅推测Kepler-47c可能存在水或生命,未证明适合居住,B错误;Kepler-47b是地球的3倍大,C错误;Kepler-47b比Kepler-47c离恒星更近,D错误。
