Should pet cats be allowed to go outside?
Pet cats that live or go outside kill lots of wild animals. Recent studies find that outdoor cats in North America take out between ten and thirty billion birds and mammals(哺乳动物) each year. 1 There are about 600 million pet cats around the world, which might have a bad influence(影响) on wildlife populations(物种数量), and even biodiversity (生物多样性) conservation.
" 2 And the question is, 'Well, does it matter?' And especially we want to know, 'Where are the cats actually hunting? 3 Or are they somehow going out into some nature protecting areas?'" Roland Kays from North Carolina State University said.
Together with coworkers in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, Kays gave small GPS trackers(追踪器) to people to study cats with owners. 4 In total, more than 900 pet cats were tracked in this way and all of their owners made them run outside freely.
5 One British cat called Max walked almost two kilometres to go out and back home along a road between two neighbouring villages! But the others were homebodies, rarely walking more than a hundred metres from home. In other words, they used their own backyards, plus those of a few neighbours, as their hunting grounds. The findings are in the magazine Animal Conservation.
A. Some cats truly liked travelling around the place where they lived.
B. Anyone who has a cat may see their cats bring animals home.
C. The cats' owners really worry about their cats' safety.
D. Are they catching animals in their backyards?
E. They put the trackers on their cats' collars (项圈).
F. What kinds of animals do they really catch?
G. But the influence hasn't been sure.
