The early residents(居民)in care homes in London are given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely.
The project was put forward by a local charity to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people's health and happiness. It is also being used to help patients suffering from dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Workers in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is Ruth Xavier. She said, “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school.”
“I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they've gone to bed.”
“It's good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I'm enjoying the creative activities, and it is great to do something useful.”
There are more than 700 elderly people looking after hens in over 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial(财政的)support to carry it out in the whole country.
Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, said, “Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative meetings. We are looking forward to the good points and fun the project can bring to people here.”
Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said, “We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities.”

1. 细节理解题:定位原文第一句“The early residents in care homes in London are given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely.”,明确说明项目里给居民的照料对象是母鸡,排除A(药物)、B(钱)、D(孩子),选C。
2. 细节理解题:定位第二段第一句“The project was put forward by a local charity to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people's health and happiness.”,可知项目的目的是减少老人的孤独感、提升老人的健康和幸福感,本质是改善老年人的生活,A(给老人提供兼职)、C(为医学研究筹款)、D(在养老院营造和平氛围)均不符合原文描述,选B。
