Children usually like animals, but many zoos are too far away from children's houses. A "small zoo" in Qingdao is special—it is in a welfare home.
The Qingdao Children's Welfare Home has about 200 children and most of them have health problems. They are lucky because the zoo is near their house. They can see animals out of the windows.
Last year, a big boy there wasn't in good health. The head of the welfare home visited him every day. On one visit, the head asked, "What do you want to do after you get well?" The boy said, "I want to see animals." Then the head said, "I'll take you to the zoo after you get well." But, the next day, the boy left the world. "I was very sorry because the boy's dream didn't come true," the head said. Just then he wanted to build a small zoo in the welfare home. It would be for the children who love animals. So here came the small zoo.
Also, the zoo is different from others because all the animals are children's favourite. Now there are horses, sheep and peacocks in the small zoo. When the weather is good, the children go to watch and have fun with them.
"Staying with animals will help make the children healthy," said Yang Suhong, one of the doctors in the welfare home.
