三、阅读理解
The old lanes (巷子) of the Beijing *hutong* have been there for hundreds of years, mostly from the time of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. They keep not only the traditional culture, but also the way of life from the past. By visiting the Beijing *hutong*, people can go shopping, eat delicious food and watch the street life. What's more, it's a good way to learn more about the daily life of people in Beijing.
A *hutong* is a lane formed by the *siheyuan* on both sides. The *hutong* often have interesting names, which tell their origin (起源), location (方位) or history. In these gray lanes, children can play and chat.
One of China's most famous writers, Lao She, was born in a *siheyuan* in the western half of the city. His childhood in the *hutong* was very important to him. Even after being away from Beijing for more than 20 years, he still clearly remembered them. He wrote about them in his novel *Four Generations (代) under One Roof*.
Today, Beijing still has about 1,000 *siheyuan* for people to live in. However, many *hutong* are in great danger because of the rise of new buildings. So, we should try our best to protect the *hutong*, the treasure of traditional culture.
In order to protect *hutong*, we need to take action. Firstly, we should tell people that it is important to protect the *hutong*. Also, the government (政府) should find ways to stop the *hutong* from going away because of new buildings. Lastly, we can organize community activities to clean and take care of the *hutong*. Let's work together to protect the *hutong* and pass on our traditional culture to future generations.
