Hulun Buir Grassland is located in Hailaer in the north-east of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (内蒙古自治区) in China. The terrain (地势) of Hulun Buir Grassland is high in the east and low in the west, with a total area of about 100,000 square kilometres. It is one of the four biggest grasslands in the world. Hulun Buir Grassland is the best grassland in China, with more than 500 lakes and over 3,000 rivers. It is home to over 120 pastures (牧场) and more than 1,300 kinds of plants.
Hulun Buir Grassland is named after Hulun Lake and Buir Lake. The Hulun Lake is the fourth largest freshwater lake in China. Buir Lake is south of it. Buir Lake is the boundary lake between China and Mongolia. There is a story of two young Mongolian lovers named Hulun and Buir. They saved the grassland from evil spirits (恶灵). The local people named the lakes and the grassland after them because of their courage (勇气) and wisdom.
Besides its beautiful landscape, the Hulun Buir Grassland also produces meat, milk, fur and other livestock products. As the birthplace of Genghis Khan (成吉思汗), it is also a world-famous place of interest.
