Taihu Lake is the third largest freshwater lake in China, after Poyang Lake and Dongting Lake. Crossing two provinces, Taihu Lake is located in southern Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang. It is linked (连接) to the famous Grand Canal (大运河), and a number of rivers rise from Taihu Lake, including the Suzhou River.
The name of Taihu Lake means "great lake" in Chinese. Taihu Lake is just like a bright pearl shining in the Yangtze River Delta (三角洲). There are 48 islets (小岛) of different sizes in the huge lake. Yuantouzhu, or the Turtle Head Islet, is one of the most famous islets. Yuantouzhu, located in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, is one of the 5A scenic attractions (5A级景区) in China. It got its name from its special shape like the head of a turtle stretching (伸展) into the water.
Taihu Lake is also famous for its fishing industry (渔业). Travelling there, tourists can taste the famous local dishes made of the "Taihu Lake Three Whites", namely white shrimp, whitebait and whitefish.
