Six-to-twelve-year-olds in California are required to learn cursive handwriting. It was left out for many years because typing on computer keyboards was taught. It has come back. A law was made requiring that handwriting be taught to Californian students in grades one through six. And it requires cursive lessons in grades three and above.
Cursive is a kind of handwriting in which all the letters in a word are connected to each other. California's Governor(州长) signed the law in October, 2023. California's grade school students were required to learn it in Fullerton, California in January 2024.
Experts say learning cursive improves brain development, reading skills, and hand movement. Some educators also find value in teaching children to read historic documents and family letters from past generations.
Keller teaches grades four to six at a primary school in Fullerton. She began to teach cursive learning before the law took effect on January 1st, 2024. Some children complained about the difficulty, but Keller had a ready answer. "We tell them, 'Well, it's going to make you smarter, it's going to make some connections in your brain, and it's going to help you move to the next level.' Students want to be smarter so they want to learn," Keller said. During a visit to the school library in 2025, Keller said one student got excited when seeing a picture of the *US Constitution*, written in 1787. The student said, "It's cursive!"
Several of Keller's students said the subject was difficult, like the letter Z, but they enjoyed it anyway. "I love it. It's fun to learn new letters," said Sophie, a 9-year-old in the fourth grade. In the teacher Nancy's class, one of her third-grade students, Andrew, said, "It's fun. Now I can read my mum's writing and it's for my secrets."
1. What does the underlined word "it" refer to in Paragraph 2?
A. The law.
B. Cursive handwriting.
C. Computer typing.
D. The *US Constitution*.
2. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The development of children's brains.
B. The advantages of learning cursive.
C. The ways of teaching children to read.
D. The people supporting the cursive learning.
What is Andrew's attitude towards learning cursive?
A. He thinks it's interesting.
B. He thinks it's too difficult.
C. He doesn't mind learning it.
D. He has to learn it because of his mum.
根据第二段中“Cursive is a kind of handwriting ... California's grade school students were required to learn it”可知,前文刚介绍完“草书”的定义,后文“被要求学习的内容”即指草书,故 it 指代 cursive handwriting。
Now I can read my mum's writing and it's for my secrets.”

1. 做代词指代题时,先定位代词所在的语句,向前追溯前文最近出现的核心讨论对象,结合语境判断代词指代内容,排除不符合逻辑的干扰选项;
2. 做段落大意题时,不要被段落里的单个细节误导,要梳理整段所有信息的共同指向,找到段落的核心主题;
Now I can read my mum's writing and it's for my secrets.”,直接能看出Andrew认为学习草书很有趣,对应A选项。
1. B 2. B 3. A
