Seagrass is super helpful: it takes in 10% of the ocean's carbon each year, 35 times faster than rainforests. It uses carbon to grow leaves and roots, and keeps carbon even after it dies.
However, this useful plant is now in danger. Rising temperatures, storms, pollution, coastal buildings and overfishing all make the number of seagrass drop quickly.
The UN Environment Programme says a seagrass area as big as a football field is destroyed every 30 minutes. Seagrass is becoming less at a speed of about 7% a year. This is quite worrying for our environment. If we do nothing, some seagrass will disappear completely by 2050.
Solving this problem needs countries to work together. Luckily, people in many places are taking action to protect seagrass.
