Mammals(哺乳动物) are animals that feed their babies on milk. Many pets and farm animals are mammals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, cows and sheep. Human beings are mammals too. Mammals are warm-blooded. This means that they can move around and stay active even in cold weather.
A baby mammal only feeds on its mother's milk. Feeding on milk helps the young mammal grow fast. It also means that the young mammal must stay close to its mother, which helps keep it safe.
Flying in the dark
Bats are the only mammals that can fly. They also have such good hearing that they can fly in the dark. Some bats catch moths(蛾), mice or fish. Others feed on soft fruit.
The fastest runner
The cheetah(猎豹) is the fastest mammal. It uses its speed to hunt other animals. It can run faster than 60 miles an hour, but it can only do this for a short time. Then it needs to rest.
The biggest land mammal
The elephant is the biggest land mammal. It weighs more than 5 tons—that's as much as 80 people.
Looking out for each other
Many herbivorous(食草的) mammals, such as buffaloes and wild horses, live together in large groups. This helps keep them safe because there are many eyes to watch out for wolves, lions or leopards.
