B
“A friend in need is a friend indeed.” Friends are important to us. Friends help us get through hard times. Friends also influence us a lot. Let’s enjoy two poems about friends.
To Wang Lun
—By Li Bai
I, Li Bai, sit in a boat about to go,
When suddenly on shore your farewell songs overflow.
However deep the Lake of Peach Blossoms may be,
It is not so deep, O Wang Lun! As your love for me.

A Time to Talk
—By Robert Frost
When a friend calls to me from the road.
And slows his horse to a meaning walk.
I don’t stand still and look around.
On all the hills I haven’t hoed(锄地).
And shout from where I am, what is it?
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe(锄头) in the mellow ground,
Blade(锋刃)—end up and five feet tall.
And plod: I go up to the stone wall,
For a friendly visit.
Both poems are famous in their cultures, but they tell different stories. Li Bai described the scene(场景) of his friend seeing him off. American poet Robert Frost wrote about a friend’s visit when he was working. Li made a comparison(比较). His poem shows the friendship between him and his friend is deeper than the deep water. Frost’s poem, on the other hand, tells the readers that we should stop what we are doing to talk with our friends. It tells us that nothing should get in the way of spending time with friends. The language is simple but sincere(真挚的).

Once in Hebei, two different families each adopted(领养) a twin girl when the girls were just ten days old. The girls grew up in the same city. However, for seventeen years, they didn't know each other.
Then, one day, one of them heard from a classmate that a girl working at a clothing store looked exactly like her. She decided to go to have a look. The first time she saw the girl's face, she felt close to her. After talking, the girls discovered that they shared the same birthday and had the same taste in food. They even had the same voice. Soon, they became best friends and talked about everything. However, their adoptive(收养的) families both kept the truth secret(秘密的) from them.
After being best friends for 14 months, the girls finally learned the truth from their families: they were twin sisters! To decide who should be the elder sister, they played a game of rock-paper-scissors. Later, they learned that the game's result was exactly the same as their actual birth order.
More surprises followed. The sisters each bought an apartment in the same neighbourhood without planning it. And their 13-year-old children even ended up in the same class! Now, the sisters sometimes attend school meetings, and their children's teacher finds it hard to tell one from the other.
Twenty years after their reunion(团聚), the sisters still feel thankful for finding each other. In 2025, they shared a message online, “Let's look forward to the next twenty years together.”
