On 18 March, Xie received the L'Oréal-UNESCO Prize For Women in Science for her achievements in Chemistry. It is generally known as the "Nobel Prize" for women in science.
Xie is a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China. She has discovered new nano materials (纳米材料) that can efficiently (有效地) turn heat into electricity.

But she did not do well in Physics in the national college entrance examinations and was admitted (被录取) as a Chemistry major (专业) at Xiamen University.
She told Anhui Daily that she didn't feel upset. "I did what I had to do and I think it's better to let nature take its course (顺其自然)," she said. She kept working hard, but this time in Chemistry. She went to the lab early and left late. She has gone through many failures, but her positive attitude has carried her far in the chemistry world.
"You may fail 99 times out of 100 trials (试验), but a positive attitude will help you catch the chance to succeed finally," said Xie.
