(1) 根据上文“Koalas have short front legs and long strong back legs. Their fur is brown and thick.” D“Koalas live in trees and have big noses to smell.” 但考虑到此空后文提到“A baby koala is very small when it is born.”,更侧重于考拉幼崽的特征,因此此处应选与考拉整体特征相关的句子,选项B“It keeps them warm during the cold weather.”
(2) 此处描述考拉幼崽刚出生时的状态,根据下文“It lives in its mother’s pouch(育儿袋) for 5 to 7 months.” C“It has no fur and can’t see anything either.”
E“As adults, koalas grow to be about 60 cm tall and weigh from 9 kg to 13 kg.”

When winter comes, Siberian cranes fly from north-eastern Siberia in Russia to Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province, China. About 95 per cent of the birds spend the season there. However, climate change has endangered the birds’ living places.
“In some years, Poyang Lake experiences floods, while in others, it experiences droughts(旱灾). Both of these factors caused less food in cranes’ living areas,” Qian Fawen, a researcher from the National Bird Banding Centre of China, said. To help deal with the problem, the local government has built 70 hectares of lotus roots(莲藕) in Nanchang to provide food during the winter for the cranes. The birds’ population has risen from about 3,000 to more than 5,000 over the past 20 years, according to Qian.
Over the years, China has worked hard to protect these birds. Thousands of places in the country have been taken as living places for them. Most of the endangered birds stay in wetlands. Known as the “earth’s kidneys”, wetlands play a key role in cleaning water, preventing floods and helping with biodiversity(生物多样性).
To protect China’s wetlands, the Wetlands Protection Law was published on June 1, 2022. It stops building work on important national wetlands and some activities. Thanks to these efforts, more birds stay in the nation’s wetlands in winter. In February, the Hunan government reported that black-faced spoonbills, also endangered birds, were seen at Dongting Lake after an absence of five years. If we protect the wetlands well, we will see more endangered animals and enjoy the beauty of nature even more.
1. Why was there less food in cranes’ living places at Poyang Lake?
Because Poyang Lake experiences floods and droughts, which caused less food in cranes' living areas.

2. How many cranes were there at Poyang Lake 20 years ago?
There were about 3,000 cranes at Poyang Lake 20 years ago.

3. What has China done to protect these birds over the years?
China has worked hard to protect these birds and taken thousands of places as living places for them.

4. Why did the Wetlands Protection Law come out?
The Wetlands Protection Law came out to protect China's wetlands, which play a key role in cleaning water, preventing floods, and helping with biodiversity.

5. What should you do or not do when visiting birds’ living places like Poyang Lake?
When visiting birds' living places like Poyang Lake, we should protect the environment, not litter, not disturb the birds, and follow the rules and regulations of the protected areas.
