Ⅲ. 阅读理解(每题 2 分,满分 16 分)
A
There is a particular sort of box that hides in every home, full of “memorabilia”. Baby teeth, old clothes and toys, spare keys for locks unknown:the whole thing is filled with association, emotion, nostalgia(怀旧)and pain. That box is my doom(劫数).
Because I decide that turning 40,being pregnant and training for a second career aren’t enough to be getting on with in a single month,I am also in the lucky position of moving house, which means opening various drawers, boxes, and cupboards, only to discover a pit of painful memory or a terrible mess at every turn.
But listen to me:you can get rid of these things. Honestly,I love throwing things away. Not the irresponsible(不负责任的)rush of pouring perfectly usable items into landfill,of course. But taking a box of toys to a charity shop when my son is at school? Delicious. Handing out unworn clothes to friends and neighbours? Delightful. Recycling early drafts of my book? Incredible. To be honest,I hope we will all have better things to do than read through our old notebooks, diaries or letters. So,I put them in the recycling. That sweet unburdening release(释放)can cheer me up for the rest of the day.
I grew up in a house where sentimentality(多愁善感)was a disease. When our old gas oven broke,my sister made my parents bury it in the garden with a full, flowery ceremony because she wasn’t yet ready to say goodbye. My father cries every time he looks at one of the blankets knitted by his mother—though it is still on his bed.
In this environment,it can’t be avoided that at least one child was going to go the other way. The cuckoo(布谷鸟)in the nest,I developed a strong and early love of getting rid. When the chance arises,do I catch it without thinking twice to throw that stuff out of my house and move on? You bet your box of doom that I do.
1. Why does the author say that box is her doom?
A. Because it puts her in a lucky position.
B. Because it leads to messy feelings.
C. Because it gets in the way of her moving.
D. Because it makes her house a total mess.
2. How does the author find the act of throwing things away?
A. Generous.
B. Beneficial.
C. Mindless.
D. Irresponsible.
3. Why does the author mention her family members in Paragraph 4?
A. To introduce a family tradition.
B. To stress how special her family is.
C. To identify the reason for her behaviour.
D. To criticize them for being overly emotional.
4. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To encourage a practice.
