B
Among all traditional Chinese operas, Beijing opera has the most well-known facial make-up. The art is popular around the world and is a symbol of Chinese culture. Different colours are used to show different characters, but at first, only three colours were used: red, white, and black.
Red is usually used to show a character that is honest and loyal. At first, red was just to show the colour of a person’s skin. Over time, it started to mean “brave and loyal”. A famous red-faced character is Guan Yu, who is known for his loyalty.
A white face usually shows a character who is evil or cruel. A well-known character with a white face is Cao Cao, who was powerful but unkind during the Three Kingdoms Period.
A black face can show either a rough and brave character or a fair and selfless person. Zhang Fei from *Romance of the Three Kingdoms* and Li Kui from *Water Margin* are examples of the rough, brave type. Bao Zheng, a famous judge from the Song Dynasty, is an example of the fair and selfless type.
Later, more colours were added: Purple stands for justice, yellow (often used for soldiers) means bravery, and blue shows a strong personality.
