One Saturday evening, Mr and Mrs Phillips, along with their children, Roger and Helen, were playing cards in the living room. Suddenly, the telephone rang (发出铃声).
"That's your Aunt Elizabeth. She's back from Denmark, and she's coming to visit us tomorrow morning. She has a surprise for you two," Mr Phillips said.
The next morning, Aunt Elizabeth visited with a big box. It was full of small pieces of ice. She put her hand into the ice and slowly took out a big egg. "This egg is from an ice cave (岩洞) in Denmark. It's very special. Now, I need your help."
"There's no heating (暖气) in my office at the museum during the summer," said Aunt Elizabeth. "I thought I could leave it here because I want to see what happens when we put the egg in a warm place."
The children got a cardboard box and put the egg inside. Then they put the box next to the kitchen radiator.
Aunt Elizabeth came to check the egg every day, but nothing happened. Then, one day during breakfast, the children heard a noise. "Look! The egg! Something is happening. It's cracking (裂开)." Slowly a small bird opened its beak.
