Rodney read the headline in the local newspaper: “Flamingo Flocks(群集)to South.” A rare bird had found its way to his small California town. It was a flamingo, the report said, a real one—not like the plastic one planted in Rodney's neighbour's yard. The town didn't even have a zoo, so this news was really exciting. But where was the bird?

Only one man in town claimed(声称) to have seen the wild bird, in a wetland park of the town. He described the flamingo's pink feathers and said it stood about 3 feet tall. He also said the flamingo did not seem sick or hurt.
Rodney thought the story sounded suspicious(令人怀疑的), so he decided to go on a flamingo-finding adventure. He also decided to take his best friend, Paul, with him. “If we find it,” Rodney said, “we can write a report on protecting wild animals.” The boys took their boots, binoculars(双筒望远镜) and a camera. They packed some peanut butter sandwiches too. Then they set out for the wetlands with great excitement.
The weather, however, had other plans. The dirt road was muddy because of the rain. With their boots sinking deep into the mud, reaching almost to their knees, Rodney and Paul trudged(费力地走) through mud and many water plants. They searched carefully for quite a long time and they were all tired, but they never found the flamingo. Finally, the sun began to set, and a cold wind cut through the boys' jackets and they had nothing left to eat. Rodney and Paul had no choice but to go back home.
As they turned onto Paul's dark street, Paul's mum was waiting outside, looking worried. Paul dragged his feet up the driveway slowly. His mother put her arm on his shoulder, and then the two went inside.
Rodney continued down the street towards his house, past his neighbour's yard and that plastic pink flamingo. “Great,” Rodney thought, “now they have a pair.” Out of the corner of his eye, Rodney saw something move.
