Keju exams began in the Sui Dynasty and lasted for about 1,300 years before the system ended in the Qing Dynasty. Keju exams were mainly about classical literature. Poetry was very important in earlier keju exams, and later more attention was paid to writing.
In the Qing Dynasty, keju was held every three years and it was made up of four rounds. Students had to pass the first round in order to take part in the next one. Each round would take one to three days. As for the last round, the palace exam (殿试), students had to go to the capital city. Since the transportation (交通) in ancient times was not well developed, many people went to the capital on foot. It took some of them months to get there.
